FIRE AT OTAKI HOSPITAL
ANNEXE BURNED TO THE GROUND.
Press Association.—By Telegraph. A fire at Otaki Hospital this afternoon resulted in the destruction of the five-roomed annexe of the main building. It comprised the porters' and maids' rooms and lay on the eastern side of the main building, thus being sheltered from the westerly wind which was blowing. A portee is said to have gone out leaving r» small fire in a grate the sparks from which apparently fell and ignited the woodwork. A patient noticed smoke and gave the alarm and Dr. Huthwaito organised a bucket brigade which managed by the use of wet blankets to prevent the fire spreading to the main building, the wall of which was scorched. The annexe was burned to the ground. The patients it* the hospital wot got ready for removal, but there was no necessity to shift them. The buildings were insured for twothird* in the South British Office and for one-third in the Shite Iffice httis thv ! amounts are not available.
