Government have sanctioned the expenditure of £BOOO on additions to the Seacliff mental hospital, Dunedin. A Carterton Press Association message states that Carrington School and residence were destroyed by lire at 2 o'clock yesterday morning. Nothing was saved.
New South Wales frozen meat export trade is showing a remarkable increase in quantity and value. The figures for the present season totally eclipse last year's. Yesterday Wanganui Supreme Court was engaged all day in the new trial of Kelly, charged with indecent assault. A verdict of not guilty was returned. —Association.

Two thefts of mail bags are reported to have taken place on Saturday last on the railway between Palmerston and Turakina. It is stated that one mail bag put on the train at Ilalcombe arrived at its destination at Palmerston minus £l4O in notes. Anther sum of money is reported to have been missed from a mail bag despatched to Turakina. The matter has been reported to the police, but up to the present time no trace of tlie missing money has been found.

At the inquest at Dunodin on R. M. Crosbie. whose body was found in Lower Dundas street on Sunday afternoon after lie had been missing for some days, a verdict was returned of death from exposure.

R. S. Lamb and Co., of Sydney, arc building a new steamer for the Syd-ney-New Zealand trade, to be named the Omana. She will run in conjunction with the Ingn, Ihumata, and Joan Craig. The new steamer will carry four thousand tons or two and a half million feet of timber.

About 2 o 'clock yesterday afternoon a drowning accident happened in Evans Bay, Wellington, an elderly man, John Lloyd, losing his life;. Lloyd with three other men was sailing a skiff when it capsized. Threeof the men scrambled on to the bottom of the boat but Lloyd it is thought got entangled in the rjgging though efforts were made to get him to safety. A boat manned by employees of the Patent Slip put out and' succeeded in bringing them ashore. Efforts were at once made to resuscitate Lloyd: but were not successful and when a doctor arrived he could only pronounce life to be extinct. Lloyd was a married man. The concert to be given by I'almerston Orchestral Society on Wednesday, 10th June, promises to rank as one of the best in the last nineteen years. The members have been practising; most assiduously for some time, and with the assistance of several new players they should' give a very .gpod : interpretation of an, ambitious programme. The vocalists are Miss Kearrins and Mr Short, both of whom are well known to Palinerston audiences. To assist the candidates for Queen of the Carnival, the Society has decided' to give three blank voting tickets with each ticket for admission soldi at the door, and as tha prices of mission are only 2s and Is, no dbubt there will be a large number who will take the opportunity of hearing: the concert and assisting their own particular candidate' as well.
