GISBORNE, March 24. The floods in the Waipaoa river are subsiding. Beyond the breaking of the Puplic Works Department's temporary bridge no damage was done. At Motu the flood was the highest for years. A report from Port Awanui states that the Waiapu river is in heavy flood and is causing loss of sheep. The extent of the damage is not yet known. The water was nearly up to the decking of the Waiapu bridge, both approaches to which were washed away. The river,is now going down.
