There was only a fair attendance of members at the meeting of the Council of Palmerston Chamber of Commerce last evening to consider railway matters, and it was decided to postpone the meeting till a future date.
A body fouiid at Thorndon reclamation works has been identified as that of Carl Neilson, alias James Peterson, a labourer, and a native of! Denmark. His age was about sixty, and his identity was established by means of finger prints.—Association.
On Mond4y while Mr J. Tamati, Kangiotu, was attending to the gearing underneath his motor car the jack supporting the car slipped, and Mr Tamati received the whole weight of the car on his body. He was removed to a private hospital at Palmerston suffering from injuries to his spine.
Mr E. R. Foley, a Dannevirke resident, has invented an automatic dou-ble-acting railway, tram carriage, or truck coupling. In addition to being a great labour-saving device, the coupling reduces the possibility of accidents, particilarly in shunting operations. When one carriage or truck Is shunted to the otner the coupling (which presents the appearance of a spear) acts automatically, and it is absolutely impossible for the carriages or trucks to become detached,, except when a spring lever is operated. Owing to the withdrawing of Government aid from school companies,. Nelson College Cadets did not go into, camp during the past year or two.. Old boys have now come to the cadetH' assistance and three companies and the artillery section will go into camp at Brightwater at Easter. The boya will be under complete military discipline. Major Pin will, G. 8.0., will, be in command. A number of the college boys have qualified for commissions in the Imperial army direct from college, and several have already risen to the ranks of captains and majors.—Assn. ~ A young man named James Meredith—who had only been in the Ohakune district about six weeks met with a very serious accident on the Waipuna road this week. It seema het had just completed a contract in that locality and was riding out to be present when the engineer came to> pass the work—when he fell from hisrhorse and was caught fast by the stirrup. Unfortunately the horse waa frightened or restive, and Mr Meredith was kicked or trampled very severely, receiving dangerous hurts internally. He was found in an unconscious state some little while later by Mr W. McCoubrie, who made all possible haste to relieve the plight of the injured man, and with assistance managed to get the sufferer to Raetihi. He was then sent to Taittape Hospital.
