RHODESIAN ELECTIONS. CAPETOWN, yesterday. The Rhodesian elections largely favoured the chartered company. SYDNEY, to-day. It is reported that preparations are being made for opening up a large new colliery at Cessnock. The name of the party financing the scheme has not been divulged but it is believed to be a wealthy speculator who negotiated for the purchase of the same land five years ago. It will be the largest colliery in the southern hemisphere. Western Australia has been admitted to the Cricket Board of Control. The Tasmanian Rowing Association asked the New South Wales Association to support its application that New Zealand oarsman be allowed to row in the Tasmanian crew at the forthcoming championships in Victoria. It is understood that the executive replied to the effect that each competitor must sign the necessary declaration set out by the Inter-State conference. This revives the question: Are New Zealand oarsmen amateurs according to New South Wales definition. Sir Joseph Carruthers has published an opinion that the totalisator is not an illegal means of betting within the strict meaning of the Gaming Act Mr W. A. Holman, Premier, has promised an immediate inquiry. The cable steamer Patrol has returned after overhauling the eastern cable between Botany nad Nelson. The actual cost of repairs was £25,000. The cable was laid in 1876 and was found to be in better condition than the new one. Both were in excellent condition.
