A PONGAROA ROAR.
At a banquet at Pongaroa Mr Fisher, after detailing what New Zealand has done in naval matters, went on to say:—"lt was now generally admitted that no crisis had occurred in 1909 to make our contribution of a battleship specially necessary. At the time some mention had been made of a dispatch from the British Government, but search had disclosed tbe fach that no such dispatch was in existence. He believed that it should be the policy of the New Zealand Government to supply not only funds but men and ships for Imperial defence. That was true Imperialism, to find our own ship and our own men. It was surely better man to say, 'We will find the money. You lind someone to put up ;i fight.' In Australia it had been found that the best instincts of the race hnd been aroused by the sense of possessing ships of an Australian navy. He hoped that New Zealand would have the same experience.' 7
