FIRE AT TERRACE END

BIX-EOOMED HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED. " NO WATER AVAILABLE.

Shortly after 10.30 last night the Fire Brigade were summoned to a fire in a six-roomed house in Knowles street, Terrace End, owned and occupied by Mr George Olsen, and built on the Advances to Workers' system. The Brigade were smartly on the scene but were rendered practically useless owing to there being only an inch pipe with the nearest plug about 500 yards away. It appears that Mrs Olsen who is entering the hospital to-day to undergo an operation was cleaning up the house and was airing clothes in front of the fire in the kitchen. She had just finished ironing and went to her neighbour's house for some milk for a cup of tea and on returning found the kitchen in flames. Mrs Olsen, previous to leaving the house, had just counted'out £2O for rent and had placed the money on a shelf but was unable to save it. Mr Olsen was jpst returning from town when the outbreak occurred. The furniture was insured for £SO in the State Office, Mr Olsen estimates his loss on the furniture at £l5O above insurance. The house is insured in the State Office but the amount is unavailable. There are 10 or 12 new houses in Knowles street and only an inch pipe water service.
