WHY RHODES DID NOT MARRY.

Some good stories of Cecil Rhodes are told by one of his secretaries, Mr Gordon Le Sueur, in volume by him entitlei 'Cecil Rhodes: 'The Man and His Work ' Mr Le Sueur deals with the allegation that Rhodes was a woman-hater by quoting Rhodes' own wor's : "Women! Of course, I don't hate women. I like them, but I don't want them always fussing about " Another time be said: "You may ask me why I never married, and co you know? I aoswer you very fairly that I have never yet seen tbe woman whom I could get on in the same house with." "He tried to give the impression of being without feeling, but nothing is more absurd. He was crammed with sentiment to his finger-tips, but adopted a brutal manner and rough exterior to cover up tne weakness of sentiment, and thus many a broken-hearted man and woman left him with the impression—entirely erroneous—that he was a callous brute lacking in human sympathy." Rhodes was very careless about his clothes, and when travelling he woul I make a favorite of one particnlar coat and wear it eery day. One such favorite he at: last ordered to be sent to the tailor to be cleaned and mended.. Mr Le Sueur received it back next day wit'i the following : "Dear sir,—-Herewith the Right Hon. C J. Rhodes' coat, uncleaned and unmends 1 .
