James Ryan, arrested in connection with the death of Stephens, who was found dead in a paddock with bloodmarked bottles beside him, was a witness at the inquest, and gave evidence that he got off a tram car at ILoO p.m. and noticed a man and woman conversing. He heard dogs barking at 1.30 in the morning, went out, and saw a man lying bleeding from the ear, with a beer bottle alongside, which seemed stained with blood. The woman, who was intoxicated, asked him to bring the police. When he returned the woman had gone.
