LABOUR DEMAND.
DEPARTMENTAL FIGURES. The September numb6r of the Journal of the Department of Labour states that in Wellington, daring the month, 260 applications were received an -1 dealt with, 162 being from employers anl 98 from workers in need of employment; 82 of the latter were placed in suitable positions. There were 62 applications for domestics, and 30 applications from workers, 40 dayworkers wanted and 35 available, *an: only 2 laiyhelps offered when 10 were applied for. Cooks were in demand, but only 5 applie i when 13 were require i. In ChristchurcQ it jis stated that the scarcity of domestic workora is acately felt, especially in the country. More engagements could be made if girls woal ■ accept positions in private houses, but they prefer «' otels or boarding >ouses. In Mastertcu better wages are being offered for domestics, employers realising they must pay more if they wish to obtain domestics ,in the country districts In Auckland a number of hotel and boarrlinghouse workers are oat of employment.
