SEVERE THUNDERSTORM.
NEAR WINTON
A good deal of valuable stock was destroyed as a result; of a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by unusually vivi«l lighting, whic'i occurre '■ at Sonti Hillen' 1 , near Wintou, shortly after midnight on September 4.
Terrified at te violence of the s'orm, stock on farms in the district stampeded in all di ections, and a good deal of damage was done. Mr W Muir's well known pacing mare Lady Hector, dashe? hea'long into a brick building, dying almost immediately. On Mr Boyle's farm a valuable yearling thoroughbred filly, galloped into a wire fence and was browned in a ditch into which she stumble*.
A Byr old thoroughbred filly was badly injured on Mr J Kirk wood's property, an « number of draught torses wero killed In a ditch in one spot 100 sheep were found, one being dead, while ten others, alongside a wire fence, were electrocuted A number of cattle were also seriously injured as t v :e result of toe storm, whic , t* orgh cf a kind well krown in t e district, has not usually sue 1 serious consequo^ces.
