PROMISES AND PIE CRUSTS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The Hon. James Allen is scattering promises of armies broadcast, such promises to be broken like pie crusts. A New Zealand imaginary army of 8000 was offered to England straight away. In America, the land of tall talk, it is 80,000 just to 6how those Yanks that others could lick Creation. The hon. gentleman must have been letting himself out. Of course it was a banquet speech, accountable only in that way. Probably the whole thing is a gross exaggeration like Mark Twain's obituary notice. We are all delighted to have tne circulating Minister back again to teach reform.consistency, just to keep matters lively these dull times. There is something unaccountable in Reform —even the Hon. Herries the other day in Christcnurch is reported to have made the statement that his party was now in power. As to how they got there it did not matter two dumps (honestly or otherwise), did not trouble Reform in the least. I am afraid the Square Deal Premier has an unruly team —not thoroughly broken in. He must handle the ribbons and whip in morough jockey style to keep clear of stumps.—l am, etc., MOLLEY.
