HOCKEY.

OPENING OF THE SEASON.

The five a-side hockey tournament opens at the Showgrounds this afternoon, when it is expected that 170 players will take part. Thirty-three teams (ladies and men) have entered, and as each match will occupy a quarter of an hour, four grounds will be kept going continuously from 2 o'clock. Spectators can rely on plenty of variety and some fast and exciting play. Among the visiting teams will be Otaki and Rongotea. It is regretted that Marton, the present holders of the cup, will not be represented owing to inability to get a team.

Following are the Technical School junior hockey teanrs for the five a-side tournament to-day:— A team.—Perrin, Mardon, Barnard, Aitchison, Whitehead. B team.—Ay ling, Hunt, McSweeney, Davis, Pullyn.
