[ESTABLISHED 1875.] Manawatu Daily Times The Oldest Manawatu Journal. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1913. A FIRST-CLASS PROPOSITION.

The •' town-boosting " a» d carnival fever seems to have seized hold of New Zealand, and some if the most enterprising places are now smiling over their success. There is positively no reason why Palmerston should not; participate. The time has gone by for any movement of the sort this rear, but the proposition be kepr in view for next We have as much tc offer as most of the towns that hare arisen in their energy, In natural attractions, neither Napier, New Plymouth, nor Wellington has mu± that is not exhausted in a day. They have the sea beach certainly, but little bey.:>hd coat which Palmerston cannot trump. In nny case the chief attractions in such movements are the gatherings *: hat are organised. This Easter, without any pirade of the (act. we have had a!i the elements of a carnival wpek. The onl/ thins missing has be- n enterpiise sufficient to combine and boom the fact. Wa have had Caledonian sports, a champi n ship tennis tournament, two bowling tournaments —a large and a small one—a first-class race meeting a few miles away, a North Island Bible class camp —to say nothing of a striking Salvation Army fes ival and an army wedding with the genial Commissioner i resent. On Thursday the polo tournament opens With some combination among all these factions, a great united effort could have been made to boom a carnival week to attract visitors languishing for some new place in which to spend their holiday, who would swell the attendance at all the various gatherings and otherwise leave a considerable quantity of holiday cash in Palmerston. In anticipation of such a reward the various fixtures could have been improved a hundred per cent and no one would have been other than enthusiastic in their praise. Others attractions could be added tor the evenings. And, in addition, Palmerston is not devoid of natural attractions as the ordinary Palmerstonian profes?es to believe. Special excursions could be arranged to the Gorge, to Foxton, to the reservoir. The fag-end hour.- could be spent in the public gar ens, of which Palmerston has of the finest in New Zealand. The idea has only to be handled by one or two enterprising townsmen to be developed into a first-class proposition.
