GO SLOW.
To the Editor. Sir,—The tone of the newspaper discussion on the Trams v. Motor Bus question appears to be more personal than for public benefit. In the first place the Borough Council should not have asphalted the Square roadways until the question was finally settled. It will probably prove a waste of money. I have no interest in the matter whatever, but I would advise the ratepayers to "go slow." Life nowadays is inclined to be ratli%r fast—all striving to do as others do. although we cannot afford it. I think, taking all things into consideration, that the bus is the best for a beginning, as busses can go along any of the streets, whereas trams can only go where rails are laid—a very expensive matter. Palmerston is pretty flat and the streets good and wide, so that there is very little danger. Instead of borrowing from £60,000 upwards for tramways, cars, etc., for only a short distance. £IO,OOO would be sufficient to provide sufficient busses to do Palmerston for some time; and if decided afterwards to 50 for trams the busses could no doubt be sold without great loss for other places. "What would suit Palmerston for the present would be two or three busses to run on the different streets on east and west sides of the railway line, stopping at Childs' Hotel;corner and at Cobb's corner respectively, so as not to interfere with railway line, and one running every half hour or so between the Post Office and Railway Station. Another th ing the expense of the tram would greatly increase the rates and the increase in rates would cause high rents so householders and ratepayers would be more heavily taxed. In any case the Borough Council should have charge not a private company. —I am, etc., LOOKER-ON.
