CHINAMAN SHOOTS

CONSUL-GENERAL WOUNDED.

BY HIS SECRETARY. Press A sen—By Telegraph—Copyright Melbourne, March 12. Thomas Jones Chia, an accomplished Chinaman, aged 550, , has been arrested on a charge of wounding with intent to murder Hung Liang Hwang, Chinese Consul-General for Australia and formerly Consul for New Zealand.

Chia, who lately became prominent through his marriage to a wellknown Australian girl, called on Hwang and, it is alleged, after a long argument regarding his private affairs, fired two revolver shots, which were resultless.

He then fired a third as Hwang grappled with him, and the bullet passed through Hwang's upper arm and shoulder. The wound is not serious.

The Chinese Government, in September, on the recommendation of the Consul, terminated Chia's engagement as secretary to the Consulate, and Chia has since been acting as manager for the Eastern Trading Company. He has held a number of important positions, including the headmastership #f the prefectual training college at Changcliow, the professorship of English in Peking University, and the chief secretaryship to Tong, who was Chinese Consul-General from 1910 to 1912.
