Mr W. J. Geddis, of Napier, lias been offered and has accepted the position of mangiiig director of the New Zealand Times Co., Ltd.—Association.
Mr G. J. Scott, D.O A., is indisposed and confined to his bed. Mrs Maurice Cohen, of Palmerston, is spending Christinas at Rotorua Mr J. 8. Winton, railwy station foreman at Palmertson, will spend a month at Nelson for his health. He leaves to-morrow.
Mr A. J. Palmer, of "the wellknown seed cleaning firm, of Palmerston, lias just returned from a business trip in the South Island. Mr Jno. Saxon, formerly a wellknown and highly respected settler in the Feilding district, died yesterday after a long illness at Levin, where he has latterly been residing. Mr W. C. Hartgill, a Wanganui College "old boy,'' captains the London Hospital Rugby team this year, and plays forward, and Mr S. E. Y. Brown, of South Canterbury, plays back. The Prime Minister, Mr W. F. Massey, will shortly spend several days at Feilding. Mr H. G. Bagnall, of Palmerston, will supervise the totalisator at the next Masterton races.
At the Rongotea Primitive Methodist Church 011 Wednesday Miss Ellen Lowman, daughter of Mr G. Lowman, of Cheshire, England, was married to Mr W. C. Glover, son of Mr J. Glover, Rongotea. Nearly one hundred guests attended the wedding breakfast. After the honeymoon Mr and Mrs Glover will reside in Palmerston.
A private telegram received in Wellington announced the death at Dunedin yesterday morning of Mr John Macfarlane Ritchie, general manager for the colonies of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, director of the Union Steam Ship Company, and a very prominent man in business circles in Dunedin. The ceremony of the "month's mind" in connection with,.the death of Father Venning, S. M., "was held at Wellington yesterday morning. The ceremony took the form of a solemn requiem mass, sung by Dean McKenna, of Masterton. There were thirty-five priests from all parts of the Dominion present, including Dean Regnault, DeanO'Shea, V.G., Yen. Archdeacon Devoy, and Dean Holly. The Rev. Father Hurley was Master of Ceremonies. The church was crowded for the service.
Mr Fred Gardes, of Foxton, who recently underwent an operation at the Palmerston Hospital, returned from a visit to Australia yesterday, via Auckland. Mr Gardes has quite regained his health. He visited Tasmania, Sydney and Melbourne. In Sydney, he said, fruit and vegetables were dear. Potatoes were selling as high as 4d a lb. In Melbourne the case was quite different. Cherries were offering in the streets at per lb., strawberries at 4d a box. Mr and Mrs Louis Bittlemeyer, of Palmerston, returned from a trip abroad yesterday. They spent a most enjoyable holiday in Europe and England. A considerable time was spent in Lindau, Mr Bittlemeyre's native town; and Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, and towns of lower Western Germany, and along the Rhine were visited. Mr Bittlemeyer has some interesting things to tell of his visits to the various centres and towns. He was fortunate enough to see the great music festival at Nuremburg, in which 40,000 singers took partdrawn from all parts of Eruope. As many as 15,000 took part at one separate performance. In his visit Mr Bittlemeyer also transacted important business.
