DOMINION NEWS.

FROM THE PAPERS

Boys are unobtainable in Dannevirke for certain callings (says the News); girls are at a premium for house work; while men for casual work are a rarity. A farmer who wanted a groom, a gardener, and a man for trucking sheep was unable to obtain one of the three, and he is known as one of the best employers in the Dominion. One boy recently refused a job because he wanted Saturday night off, when, as a matter of fact, that was the only part of the week on which his services were required.

Dannevirke has decided to hold amateur novice boxing tourney on January 29th, also to put on a professional bout.

A profit of over £SOO was made by Woodville Jockey Club over their recent meeting.

Mr L. E. Mair, who lias resigned his position as accountant at the Dannevirke branch of the Bank of New Zealand, leaves at the end of the week for Vancouver, where he will reisde in future. Mrs Mair and family left on Friday for Auckland, where they will be joined by Mr Mair. Both Mr and Mrs Mair were useful members of the Dannevirke Tennis and Golf Clubs and Amateur Operatic Society.

Some strong "talk" broke the quiet of Tuesday's meeting of the Napier Harbor Board. Mr S. Carnell (says the Herald) had something to say on almost every subject of discussion, and invariably attacked the chairman. On one occasion Mr Carnell said to the chairman: You called me a d d old liar once. The chairman: Not at a meeting. Mr Carnell: Well, you came out of your chair and called me that, and then went back to it, and so closed my mouth. The chairman: What I said was the truth. Mr Carnell: You are a cowardly blackguard. Mr C. Ellison: We ougnt not to sit here if such things are said to the chairman. Mr Carnell: I will withdraw that and will say that the chairman can screw a square peg into a round hole. The chairman: I respect your age, Mr Carnell, but I really think you would be going in the best interests of the whole community if you saw fit to recognise that the time had arrived when you might reasonably be asked to resign your position. A member: Hear, hear.
