Gerald Thomas, master of the public school at Pipiriki, was swiming in the river along with his son Raymond and Arthur Clemence, a son of the master of the native school, when Raymond got into difficulties. Clemence went to his assistance, and Mr Thomas, seeing both boys in danger, went to help them. But, as he had to swim some distance, he became exhausted, and was dragged under by the boys. The bodies are being brought to Wanganui a by the river steamer on Wednesday.
Mr Thomas was a highly respected schoolmaster. He was originally a teacher, but resigned to take up farming in the Coltyon district. A year ago he sold out and went to Pipiriki.
