HIGH SCHOOL
PRIZES DISTRIBUTED. A crowded gathering in the Municipal Hall last evening listened to the speeches and watched the annual prize-giving in connection with the Palmerston High School. Mr W. H. Collingwood, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided, and among a large platform party were Mr Buick, M.P., Mr J. A. Nash (Mayor), Mr R. McNab, Mr F. Pirani (chairman of the Wangauui Education Board), Mr G. H. Bennett (Board member), Mr T. R. Hodder, Mr J. Stubbs, Mr Barnicoat, and other governors and the instructors of the School wearing their gowns. The chairman of Governors, Mr W. H. Collingwood, delivered an opening address as elsewhere reported. Mr F. Pirani, in an interesting speech, commented on the fact that the chairman of Governors was a gentleman of great repute in local affairs and very successful in reducing overdrafts. He complimented also Mr Opie, of the Technical School. The worthy Rector of the High School was about to enjoy a well-earned trip abroad with Mrs I Vernon and they would all wish them a pleasant time. The High School was producing pupils who were making their mark in the world, and he hoped the primary schools would continue to provide it with new pupils. Mr D. Buick urged the importance of adding physical training to the training of the mind, as it was desirable that the educated boys and girls should not be puny people. A sound mind in a strong healthy body must be their aim. With the arrival of the present age of military training the boys must strive for efficiency in drill and musketry, so that if ever the need came they would be able to do their duty effectively. The girls, of course, were not to be soldiers, but they had an even more important place to prepare for—the care of the home.
The Rector in his report stated that the year's average attendance was 204, which was an increase of 24 over that of the previous year. The boarders numbered 35, as compared with 21 last year. Over 40 boys were taking the agricultural course. The swimimng classes had been poorly attended, but it was hoped that next year, with the new baths, every girl and boy would learn to swim. The prizes were then presented by the Mayoress (Mrs Nash) as,follows: PRIZE LIST. GIRLS. Dux Girl.—lvy Willis. English.—Form VI. (lower)—l. Willis; V. (upper)— F. Fairbrother; V. (lower) —B.
