ESTABLISHED 1875. Manawatu Daily Times. The Oldest Manawatu Journal. Conducted by E. D. HOBEN. Published Every Morning. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1911. THE SYDNEY STRIKE.

The strike fever which is passing round the world just, now in spite of the paliatives of Arbitration Acts is causing a very serious inconvenience iu commerce. When wo heard so moon of the strike in the Old Country we wore disposed to look upon it from a point of view of disinterested spectators, who felt that it might be interesting or horrifying or pitiful as a spectacle, (according to their point "of view) bnt it was after all.the other fellow's affair and not onrs. It has become very mnoh oars. Praotica'ly tha whole drapery and clothing retail trade, which relies almost entirely on importing, has been thrown out |of joint. Every- ; where wo hear of retailers whose orders have been delayed, so that when they get thorn they will practically get them out of season and two season's goods at once, The result will be that they must lose npon what they had expeoted to gain. Similarly the trouble of the importers has been passed along to the exporters in the shape of increased charges on frozen meat and wool imposed by the shipping companies to oover the increased wages they have been forced to pay, and we have no doubt that, following the well known practice in all such cases, the companies will permit themselves a pretty fair profit on the amount which they are mulct whon it oomes to the passing on process. The same staiy will now have to be told in connection with the inter-colonial trade told in regard to the Home trade, for the wharf strike in Sydney is having a direot effect upon our oommercial relations with the Oommmonwealth, and oar telegrams tell of steamer after steamer haying to leave Sydny for New Zealand empty.
