It was impossible for their overseers to be everywhere at once, and there should be one good man in oharge of 'e»cb job. He would like to see a snb-oommittee set tip to oonsider the whobjqufstinn ot the day lahonrors. Some system of reports as to progress of [ various ]obs was urgently needed.! As to the inorease in wages he telt (jure there would be no objection from the ratepayers, Both Wauganuij and Napier paid more than Palmej:ston. Or Nathan seconded. Or Clausen oppbsad the motion on the ground that ihe increased wage wanid bring more labourers into the twu and these v)ould onst present Bnrough employees, some of whom might not be worth the minimum wage of 8s Gd. pay should be on a classification basis Or Stobbs agreed witth Or Clausen. He would prefer, the minimum rate being altered toi a standard rate, which would enable'a less wage to hi paid to the Vm able men.
