A NEW INDUSTRY.

THE GOLDEN BAY DEMENT WORKS, Ltd.

Mr W. M. Haauay, late General Manager of tho Mauawatu Railway Company, is to direct a new industry in the Golden Pay Oeineut Works, Ltd. The compauy has been formed for the purpose of manufacturing cement, aßrhnltural and building lime at Terakohe, in tho Takaka district, and has secured an area of 700 acres of limestone, clay aud coal oouut-y ou the shores of Golden Bay, Tho works will be erected close to the beach; tenders have already been accptod for a wharf; the cainent-makiug plant, guaranteed to manufacture 400 tons of cement a week, has been ordered from Messrs Ernest Newell aud On., Gainsborough, England, a- wellknown firm of cement machinery makers. The company's consulting engineer iu Loudon is Mr H. W. Anderson, who examined the site of the works a year ago, and was greatly pleased with the prospects and reporls very favourably ou the firm to whom the contract has been let. The oemeut-makiug plant will be driven by electrioity, aud the contract for motors and power plant has beou let to Messrs Turnbull aud Jones, the well-known Wellington eleotriual engineers. The oontraot for cement plant, power, etc, will be about £75,000, and another £15,000 will be spent on wharf and buildings. The supply of lime aud olay for manufacture is unlimited, while the situation of the works is adimrably adapted for economical manufacturing, Dandling aud transport, being only 40 miles from Nolaou, 100 miles from Wellington, and within easy distance of ,Foxton, Wanganui, aud other ports ou tho West Coast of both Islands. The compauy has been advised that the machinery will be shipped in May and June, aud confidently anticipate that the works will be opened before the end of the, year. The Direotors have also in contemplation at an early date the ereotion of extensive lime kilns from which they hope to supply lime at a price hitherto unattainable in the Mauawatu and other districts on the West Coast.

The capital is £60,000, of whiol: £45,000 has already been subscribed, and the Direotors have now undei consideration the adisability of issuing shareßS up to 50,000 only at par, the other 10,000 shares being issued at a premium.

When the works are in full operation from 70 to 100 men will be employed,
