Mr Roy L, Harding, Engineer to the Oroua County Oounoil, reported yesterday that the hill on the Feild-ing-Haloombe road near the junction of the Te Rakihou ioad badly required regradiug, as owing to tin sharp turn ou the steep grade it is almost the worst on, this road. To regrade this hill and widen the roadway, making tlie'graile abont one iu fifteen and roadway about twentyfive feet wide, woold oost about £46. Mr L. G. West is at present engaged in preparing plan? for a graudstand and other neaeesary racecourse buildings for the Otaki Maori Raoing Olub for the new course at Otaki. The coarse has been laid out for some time ana is well grassed and ready for racing at the next meeting, and the new building will be fiuished to provide all modem requirements ami tenders will be called immediately in this paper. Bates's summary and forecast is as follows:—"The barometer has been steady in the North, but has risen southward of Eawhia and Napier. Unsettled, aud cloudy weather has prevailed, and raiu has fallen over the South Island. Moderate to strong northerly winds have prevailed in the North Island, and ehsuged by the west to strong southerly in the South. Present indications are for an easterly gale northward of Napier and Kawhia, with rain ami strong south easterly winds elsewhere with cold aud ohaugeable weather threatening on the East, Coast, but probably improving as the day advances. The barometer will probably fall in the far nroth. The Borough Council to-day calls applications for the lease ot the land known as.theoldraoecourse, whioh is classed as some of the best land in tliß district, and is eminently suited for a milk run ,or/ small dairy farm. The Oouuoif is prepared, if the tenant requires to reside on the land, to 'erect a cottage and cow bails for six cows, and leeEsees may tender alternately for the grazing only, or for the grazing and rent of cottage and bails. This is a splendid opportunity for anyone desirous of commencing as a small farmer or a supplier of milk to the Borough.' The whole of the rent aooruing from reserves must by Act be spent on relerves, and the Oounoil iB anxious to secure as large a rental as possible foi this'purpose, and this is why alteruate tenders are being called. The lease is'for Ave years and tenders close with the Town Oierk on the 15th of the present month.
