DEPUTATION TO MINISTER OF LABOUR. i "FACE TO FACE WITH A TOUGH PROBLEM." i (Press Association). Wellington, Last Right. . A deputation comprising reprsßßU- : tatives of thi) Wellington Trades and Labour Oouuiil, the Employers' Association, members of local bodies and lnoal members of Parliament asked 1110 Minister of Labour to. provide work tor the Unemployed. It was- stated that about lfiOO were out of work. All that could be - raised was about £2200 with Government subsidy. lu reply, the Hon. J. A. Millar said they were face to face with a very tough problem. The Government was anxious to do all it could,but ! t i.onld only snend what Parliament provided- All that would be available was about £1,400)000 to •March 31st next. He thought the unions should do something out of their fnnds. The Government was sending about 700 men to bushfelliug, railway and other wiA'kh, That was the most it could do. If public works were to be pushed on they must either borrow money or inorease taxation. He was obtaining information as to the working of the unemploy. ment legislation in England and' Germany aud hoped to formulate sohomes to preveut the national loss of workers who were , unproductive.
