A POLICE INQUIRY.
We published 011 the thirteenth instant a statement that had been made to us by leading looal representatives of the Opposition that they had "in blaok and white" testimony of corrupt administration in the shape of evidence that a member of the police foroe here had endeavoured to influenoe a vote or votes at the reoent aleotion by threatening the loss of the voter's pension if the vote was not given for the Government candidate. We pointed oat the seriousness of suoh a oliarge and that it should be enquired into ahd the troth or otherwise of it established. Slnoe then we have been informed that the statement was frewy made at the time of tho reoent election, although it had not oome to our ears. We are now informed that the referenoe in oar, oolumns was forwarded to the Police Department at Wellington and that the Department has given instruotions that an inquiry, be held. We are therefore asked to request that anyone who has any information in oonneofcion with the matter, and especially our informants, shall oommunioate with the Sub-Inspeotor here.
