THE RIVAL HUBS. (Preße Association). Auokland, Yesterday. The announcement that arrangements had been made for a regular mail service from London to Wellington, via San Franoisoo and Papeete, was the subject of considerable disoassion in commeroial oiroles to-day. The'general opinion wbioh prevailed was that so far as the new service was conoerned it was ot absolutely no use to Auokland. "I look upon this matter as a very serious one indeed for Auokland and for the Dominion as a whole," said Mi Bart Kent, president of the Chamber of Commerce, "and I think it is very muoh to be regretted that the Government has not made greater efforts to get the old San Franoisoo service re-established via Auokland. All snob, routes as that from San Franoisco to Tahiti and then, on to Wellington oan only be regarded in the light of makeshifts. The Mariposa, wbioh is to carry the mails to Papeete,'most certainly be regarded as a slow and ont-of 'date boat, whilst the Union Company's boats from the islands to Wellington are.foargo boats of a very moderate speed indeed. It is nothing but a makeshift, with an ulterior design.»
