SPORTING.

WANGANUI JOOKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING.

GLORIOUS WEATHER. KILMARNOUK WINS THE CUP,

There was perfect weather for Cup day of the Autumn Meeting of the Wanganui Jookey Club yesterday, and consequently the attendance was exceptionally large. The gardens and lawn were looking somewhat parohed, but otherwise as attractive as usual, and the glorious sunshine attraoted a very large number of ladies in Oup day attire. Raoing throughout was good, but interost naturally centred in tho Oup, whioh was won by the Taranaki-owned Kilmarnock, after a great race. The Flying Handicap, with which most of*the doubles were ooupled, was won'by the veteran Ballarat. Owing to the large attendance and numerous acceptances the totalisator rece'pts show a considerable increase over, the ooiresponding day of last year, £13,468 being put through the maohine, compared to £11,048 last year, besides which 24 bookmakers paid the necessary fees. Tho starting of Mr 0. O'Uonnor was almost perfect in every raco, and lie is to be warmly complimented on his skill, which added greatly to the success of the meeting, Tho courso was dry and very dusty, but the times recorded showed that the going t waß fair. The arrangements, as is always the caso at Wanganui, were absolutely perfect, and not a hitch uccurred to mar the day's sport, This was lately due to the officials of the club, headed by tho capable secretary, Mr. Hall, and a largo staff, who endeavoured in every way to see to the comfort of visitors. An .enjoyable feature of the day was the splendid musio given by the champion Wanganui Baud, whose offnrts were frequently applauded, Tho catering, in the handß of Messrß Dustin's, Ltd., as usual gave every satisfaction. NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Asmodeus,")

The day's proceedings were opened by the Stowards' Handicap, for whioh there were six starters. Cruoinella did her preliminary oanter with Charlie Jenkinge on her back, but was obviously unfit to raoe and was withdrawn at the eleventh hour. Tiptoe, who was a good favourite before the withdrawal of Cruoinella, finished up very hot. From an altnoßt perfect start Tiptoe went, out in the load, but rounding the back gave place to Arolight, who' led to the entrance to the straight, where the field closed up on her, Tan San here wont ahead and won by two good lengths from Tiptoe, who bad a bad run in the straight. Arolight was a good third. Flotilla hung Ire at the post. , A dozon went to the post in the Petre Haok, the Prosser-traiued Te Kahurangi being made a hot favourite. The latter led to the turn, where Toanga took the lead for a brief while, quickly suooumbing to Courier and Miss Mischief, who came fast on the outside. Courier led from the diutanco and, stalling off a strong challenge from Miss Mischief, won by a head. Mulga Bill was a length and a half away third. Flying Wind and Mussel wero both prominent in turn, but failed to stand the paue. The open hurdles boasted a field of seven, of which Waimaria was made a better favourite than Maidi. Aorangi led over the first jump, but rounding the back was replaced by Exnioor, who led to the turn. Here Maidi wont to the front and bad a lead of several leugths passing the stand for the seoond time, TheFoild-ing-owned mare increased her lead at the baok, and though rounding the turn the field closed up slightly, she won hard lield by two lengths, with Tonderghie, who put in a strong effort rounding the home turn, three lengths, away third. The Maliaki gelding Tauria was a warm favourite for the Tayforth Hack Hurdles, bnt after making all the running, fell away, and oonld only finish a poor third, after being badly bumped at the third jump from home. Chase Mab took the lead six furlongs from home, but failed to stay with Whimper, who, ooming fast over the last jump, won very easily. As anticipated, the Cup was a romarkably fine raoe,Respite the fact that lengths'separated the placed horses. At the opening of the betting Apa was the most popular fanoy, but finally' Sir Tristram usurped first position and finished uf) a good favourite. The start was almost perfect, Tangimoana, Sir. Tristram, Roosevelt and All Red being together the quickest off tlie mark. All Red was first -into the straight on the first round, but passing the the order was Uhlando, Master Delaval aud Sir Tristram.- Master Delaval led round the back, but approaohing the bend for Home gave place to All Red. At this stage Kilmarnook, who was slow to begin and ran a bad last over the early stages, oommencod to oome through, and, overhauling the leaders aB the straight was reaohed, came on and won very easily bj[ four lengths from Blue Ribbon, with Uhlando a poor third. Tangimoana was fourth, Apa fifth, and All Red sixth. Downfall, Master Delaval and Advooate were the last to finish.

Id spite of the fadt that Prosßer's' look was obviously "dead out," the pnblio stack to the stable in the Juvenile Hack, Lady Medallist with 1 Jenkins np gaining most support, Xylophone led away but gave plaoe to the favorite at the entrance to the straight. Here Lady Mensohikoff made her appearance, and with a great bnrst of speed quiokly buried all opposition and won comfortably by a length, 1 Milan fell entering the straight, but neither the jockey or the filly were injured. Subdue was a poor last. Newport and, Olemora were'the defaulters in the Wiritoa Haok Handicap, for whioh the. well-bred Ferolina was made the hottest favourite of the day. First Mate and Porolina led round the back, but at the 'home turn Anemone, who was going strong, caught the leaders, and coming on full of running, won very easily by two lengths from .Paione, who beat First Mate by a longth for seoond place. A field of ten good ones faced the barrier for the final event, the Flying Handicap, in whioh the South ißland filly Armlet receivod most attention, A splendid despatch saw the field away in good line whioh Golden Eagle was the first to break. The Taranaki mare led to the home bend, Armlet running into sooond plaoe. At the half dintanoe Ballarat caught the leader, and, stalling off a very strong ohallenge from Oold Great, just got home by a neok. Armlet was a length away tjiird, Goldon Eagle fourth, Waihuka fifth and Moriarty next. Bangipapa was last. Tho late withdrawal of Oruoinella complicated the betting somewhat in the flrßt race. The stewards wisely deoided to refund the tote money to her supporters, aud in many inistancse tho bookmakers followed thoir example,
