During tho course of the debate in the Honse of Commons on unemployment Mr Ramsay Macdonald,';Labour member for Leicester, raised strong objection to the speech in whioh the President of tho Local Government Board, Mr John Boms, justified his refusal to sanction a farm oolony for women on the grounds that; it would be useless to transfer charwomen at the cost of £2OO apiece and teach them market gardening. This Mr Macdonald termed a"contemptuous dismissal" of tho scheme, and said that if the Government did not believe in the Unemployed Workmen's Act It ought to repeal it. The President of tho Board of Trade, (Mr Lloyd George) said the grants were only tiding over temporary difficulties and the mere provision of unnecessary woik would only be demoralizing to labourers. The amendments were rejected by 159 votes to 70,
