THE RAILWAY HORROR.
DRIVERS OVERWORKED. ON DUTY EIGHTEEN HOURS. Per Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, Yesterday. The driver of the Beudigo express had been on duty for 11 hours 35 minutes, while the driver and fireman of the second engine had commenced work at 4.45 in the morning, and were on duty 18 hours later. The question whether the Bendigo train's brakes failed is engaging attention. Experts express the opinion they were on, giving rigidity to the train, which prevented any of its cars telescoping. The report of tho engineer of the second engine ha 9 leaked out. He declares the signals were against them. He next observed that the train was not being pullod up at the usual spot. Ho then applied his brakes, but they failed. The Chief Commissioner denies that there was any delay in getting relief away. The ambulance train was despatched fifteen minutes after the news was received. Everything was in readiness, but the service of doctors had to be secured. Earl Crewe has cabled his sorrow and regret.
