PROPOSED HOKOWHITU BRIDGE.
A PROTEST PROM RATE-
PAYERS,
At yesterday's meeting of the Kairanga Oonnty Council Mr Aldridge, secretarj of the Fitzherbert Ratepayers' Assooiation, waited on the Council as a deputation from the ratepayers of Fitzherbert East, to lodge an objection against the socalled Hokowhitu Bridge. He pointed out tlmt it was not reasonable that the ratepayers he represented should be forced to nay rates for such a bridge, and said that if a commission were called not onlf the Fitzherbert Riding, but the whole county would be rated. Mr Aldridge slated that the approximate cost of maintaining the present Fitzherbert Bridge over the> past twelve years had been £9,000. What, he asked, would the two bridges cost? He asked the Council to appoint a deputation to wait on the Minister of Public Works, to counteract what the deputation from Fitzherbert East might have accomplished in their efforts to secure the intervention of the Government. After some discussion it was decided to inform the Fitzherbert Ratepayers' Association that as the deputation was quite unofficial, being merely representative of Fitzherbert East settlers, and not of the Kairanga Council, the Council did not deem it necessary to take any action. Further, that it be pointed out to the Fitzherbert West ratepayers, that they have the same right to approach the Minister for Public Works against the proposed bridge as the Fitzherbert settlers had to wait on the Minister in its favour.
