WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

Tlio monthly meeting of tlio above Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs F. Pirani (chairman), A. Fraser, F. Purnell, E. Dixon, D. H. Guthrie, and G. H. Bennett. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Gargill and Spurdle. The following resignations were acceptedO. Macdonald, Himitangi; T. L. Lancaster, Campbell stroet; E. M. Carthew, Lytton street; E. 0. Riley, Raetilii; I. Garratt, Bunnythorpe; M. N. Farr, Momohaki; I. M. Fergusson, Makohau; H. I. Pitts, Hurinui; F. D. Opie, Turakina; M. G. Ourrie. The selection of the following teachers was approved: — Miss O'Brian, Utiku; J. Ritchie, Feilding; Miss W. Clemance, Kimbolton ; Miss.L. G. Oarfcen, Ohingaiti. Application of M. F. Aria, pupil teacher at Queen's Park, for transfer to Hawera was granted. Leave of absence was granted as follows:—J. 0. Hill, Feilding (December 10th to 20th); M. Hansen, Kapunui (one month); H. B. Lanyon, Silverhope (two weeks); B. Elmslie, Waverley (two weeks). CJoirespondence was dealt with as follows:— From the Commissioner, stating it was impossible to find accommodation for pupil teacher at Raurimu.— Letter to be sent to the Education Department. Orangipongo.— From 0. Hansen, applying for appointment as relieving teacher.—Application granted. Puperoa.—From Commissioners, asking that a teacher be appointed. —Resolved to appoint Mr J. Macfadzean. Mount Curl.—From the committee, asking that a female teacher be appointed.—Appointment to be made when present teacher receives another appointment. From the Education Department, notifying the following grants Raumai £350, Main South Road £300, Gonville £600, St. John's (additions) £1250, Fitzlierbert (additions) £100. Uniform books.—From the Education Department, regarding uniform school books.—Referred to the Chief Inspector. Bulls.—From the Education Department, approving of the conversion of Bulls school to a Distriot High School. Tararua.—Mr Bennett was authorised to arrange re clearing site. It was resolved to grant scholarships as follows -.—Junior National: Olive, Stempa, J. D. Thorpe, and W. G. Harwood. Junior Board: W. K. Wilton, A. Taylor, D.-H. Preston. Mr Lethbridge was appointed the Board's representative on the Wellington School Commissioners. Rata. —From Railway Department, re crossing.—Matter left in the hands of Mr Purnell. Gibbons' Scholarship.—From Mr F. H. Gibbons, asking the Board to continuej the Gibbons' scholarship till further notice. Mr Gibbons' offer was accepted, and it was resolved to write thanking him for his generosity. College street.—The matter of drainage was held over till next month. Resolutions :— Raurimu.—Resolved to thank the Commissioners for the work done to preserve safety of the school. Pohangina.—Resolved, that the Board has no funds tor the erection of a wood shed. Foxton.—Mr Fraser to report at next meeting on an application by the commitfcpe for grant for fencing. Complaint.—Resolved to draw the attention of the headmasters of the Palmerston schools to the fact that they are keeping in their schools children who have obtained proficiency certificates, and instructing them to discontinue this. Rangatawa. — Application for establishment of a school referred to Mr Purnell. | Makowhai.— From W. E. Pearce and others re establishing an independent school.—Resolved to reply that as scholars only up to the fourth standard are being taught, the Board sees no necessity to make the school an independent one. Apiti.—Application for the establishment of a District High School. It was pointed out that there were now eleven scholars holding proficiency certificates, and five scholars in the sixth standard who would attend the secondary classes. — Resolved to inform the committee that an attendance of 12 is required to warrant the establishment of a District High Scliool, and that the names submitted are not sufficient. The committee also wrote concerning the metalling of school ground and repairing lavatory; also applying for erection of shed at residence.—lt was resolved that application be made to the Department for two rooms, including bathroom, to be added to the residence. It was resolved to grant £7 7s to wards cost of repairs. Utiku.—Resolved to inform the committee that the Board is taking steps to have the matter re shed attended to. Messrs A. B. Harris and E. A. Wallace were appointed commissioners at Orautoha. Mr Guthrie to arrange re site for Main South road sohool. The Board then adjourned till February 13th.
