THE MAYOR'S MEETING.
To deal adequately with the Mayor's meeting would require a complete review of municipal affairs, and that we have not space for tonight. Mr Essex is not an inspiring speaker, but it was evident that the meeting was largely with him and his points, and strongly anti-Hay-don, so far as those making their opinions vocal were concerned, at any rate. The state of things disclosed is not creditable to any of the parties, and it was such as to arouse a good deal of sympathy with the one man against nine amongst the auditors. Evidently his Worship's feelings against the BoroughEngi-
neer have not beer! modified, and
they cannot tend to the smooth working of the municipal machine, for such a state of tension exists between the chief executive and the chief expert, while as to the relations with the Council, they are deplorable. Wo have now had the Mayor's side of the case ; it is for the Councillors to formulate theirs, in order that the ratepayers may be in a position to judge dispassionately.
