THE "HARTNETT" MILKEES AT DOOKIE COLLEGE. The Government Dairy Expert, Mr E Crowe, has now completed his calculations of returns from cows, both hand and machine milked, at Dookie College, Mel- * bourne, Victoria, for the year 1905-6. The report is a voluminous one, and has been forwarded to Mr E. G. Duffus, Secretary for the Council of Agricultural Education. Mr Crowe has also kindly supplied Messrs Holdenson and Nielson, Victorian agents for the " Hartnett," Milking -Machine, with a copy- which, can , be inspected at .their office, 521 Flindersatreet, Melbourne, by thosev interested. The gist of the report is 'tnat/in 1906, the cows milked by the- "Hartnett" machine gavo an average of 12.6 per cent, better milk yield, with 11.91 .per cent> better butter fat yield, than the cows returned under handfgmilking. According to this, a cow giving a return%bf j>B. for 12 months'»milk Hinder hand would, when milked byjthe milkers, return»<£9'4o-}, an extra* profitloif Jβl-10s per cow,ft>e3ides.about 50-percent, saving in working*expeusos. This ie solid proof of the' great superiority of machine overhead- milking , and shows the-necessity for all up-to-date farmers who wish to make a success vof dairying to lay asklts the old methods and drudgery of h.ind-uiilking in for the more np to d ite scientific metliods of machine milking. Mr Crowe concludos his report with the following.—"As far as the comparison between hand and machine milking is concerned, the result has come out m favour of the machine.— !tour obedient servant, (signed), Robert Crowe." €.
