THE ELTHAM TRAM PROJECT.

Per Press Association

Eltham, Dec. 9. The report of Mr Black, engineer, on the proposal to lay a tramway from Eltham to Opunake, has been received and is favourable. He recommends producer gas as the motive power, and estimates the cost at £119,070, revenue £18,834, expenditure £17,481, leaving a profit of £1354. An alternative scheme as far as Aurora road would cost £69,987 for 14 miles and leave a yearly profit of £1904. The electrio lighting of Eltham from the same scheme is impracticable, but it is possible to supply light and power to Opunake and Kaponga.

A meeting of delegates of local bodies interested in the tramway proposalp was held to-day, and the report was referred back to the bodies interested for discussion. Delegates from the Opunake end expressed the opinion that while the town of Opunake would rate itself, Egmont county as a whole was not in favour of the scheme. In the event of Egmont County refusing to join in, it is probable that the Eltham County Council will construct the line sa Auroa road, and secure permission to carry it right on to Opanake over Egmont County Council Roads if circumstances warrant.
