New Plymouth, December 9. William Joseph Gamblin, a middle aged man, sexton at Te Henni cemetery, committed suicide by cutting his throat last night He had been confined to bed with kidney complaint and the nurse leftjjhim about 12.30 a.m., quite comfortable. A few minutes later she heard a noise and proceeding to the room found ■him with a terrible wound, made with a razor, which had apparently been concealed under the mattress. Pahiatua, December 9.

At the inquest held yesterday a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned, a rider being addad to the effect that the Borough Council, or the proper authority, should see that in future all wells in the Borough are securely fastened.' A young man named Andrew Harris engaged in the Mount Somers coal pits had his right foot; badly crushed while engaged in his work on Thursday. He was removed to Ashburton Hospital where it was found necessary to amputate the injured limb at the ankle joint on Sunday. Last evening the body of a man named George Cochrane was found in an advanced stage of decomposition in a hut at Elgin, Wakanui, about four miles from Ashburton. The case was evidently one of suicide., as a gun containing a?discharged cartridge was found lying with the muzzle pointing towards the body and a box of the same kind of cartridges was also in the hut. Deceased was a single man about 30 years of age and had lived all his life in Wakanui district. All his relatives reside in the vicinity. An inquest will be held. The jury found that there was no evidence as to how the wound was inflicted and no suspicious circumstances.
