THE LITHGOW IRONWORKS.

UTHE LITHGOW IRONWORKS

Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, December 9. The Commercial Banking Company officially informed the Premier that the bank could not accept Parliament's terms for advancing money to Lithgow ironworks. Mr Sandford also wrote to Mr Wade that the bank had called upon him to pay the full amount of the overdraft. An officer of the bank takes possession to-day and the whole works except the blast furnaces will be closed. There is great anxiety at Lithgow, as practically the whole town is dependent on the works. It is hoped that Government and Parliament will come to the rescue and prevent the works closing. Received Dec. 9, 10.7 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 9. A deputation representative of the whole interests of Lithgow and district interviewed the Premier to ask the Government to use its efforts in evolving a scheme to prevent the closing of the ironworks. The deputation urged the importance of conserving a national industry, ?and the disaster threatening the district and a large body of workers. Mr Wade, in reply, said he realised the serious effect upon the State that the closing of the works would have. The Government was fully in sympathy with the deputation, but it required time and anxious thought to see a way out of the wood. He hoped that in a few days something would be evolved to save the industry and place it on a lasting footing. __________
