ESTABLISHED 1875. Manawatu Daily Times. The Oldest Manawatu Journal. Conducted by E. D. HOBEN, Editor & Proprietor. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1907. THE CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE.
The Postmaster-General was better than his word in regard to the continuous telephone. There were some folk who objected to the extra 4d to 5d per week for the great advantage of Palmerston North into line with the cities and having the exohange always open. There were even some few who talked of cutting off their wires father than pay the fractional impost for the general good. Well they will not need to cut off for four months—and by that time they will have forgotten that they ever wished to, as Sir Joseph Ward has decided that the concession asked for by the member for the distrit and the Chamber of Commerce, and steadily urged in these columns, will be granted as from Monday next, while the additional charge of £1 per annuum will not begin to be levied until April Ist, 1908 So, from the beginning of next week it will be possible to get the Palmerston exchange or eubscribers there at any hour of the day or night when emergencies arise, or to get through to the city exchanges at their slackest times, so as to conduct matters which cannot be easily done without oral communication.
