THE "HARTNETT" MILKERS AT DOOEIE COLLEGE. The Government Dairy Expert, Mr R. Crowe, baa now completed bis calculations of retorne from cowa, both hand and machine milked, at Bookie College, Melbourne, Victoria, for the year 1905-6. The report ie a voluminous one, and has been forwarded to Mr E. G. Duffus, Secretary for the Council of Agricultural Education. Mr Crowe has also kindly supplied Messrs Holdenson and Nielson, Victorian Agents for the "Hartnett," Milking Machine, with a copy, which can be inspected at their office, 521 Flindersstreet, Melbourne, by those interested. The gist of the report is taat, in 1906, the eowe milked by the " Hartnett" machine gave an average of 12.6 per cent, better milk yield, with 11.91 pec cent, better bettor fat yield, than the cows retained under hand milking. According to this, a eow giving a return of. £8 for 18 months* milk under hand milking , would, when milked by the "Hartaafct , milkers, return £& 10s, an extra profit of J}llos per cow, besides about 50 percent, saving in working expenses. This is solid proof of the great superiority of machine overhand-milking; Bad shows the necessity for all up-to-date farmers who wish to make a success of dairying to lay aside the old methods and drudgery of hand-milkiag and go in for the more up to date scientific methods of machine milking. Mr Crowe concludes his report with the following:—" Aβ tax ae the comparison between hand and machine milking is concerned, the result hae come out in favour of the machine. —iOur obedient servant, (signed), Eobekt Crows.* , C.
