Stead's Boniform, J. Buckley's All Red, G. M. Aynsley's Bonny Glen, G. Dunnett's Dunborve, G. M. Cnrrie 's Carmania, W. J. Greenwood's Lady Ferris, W. Foss's First Gun. WOODVILLE JOTTINGS. By "Augur." It is stated that a commission was lying in Christchurch for a week previous for execution on King's Lynn " first start." It duly materialised. Two of the first day winners were plainly labelled "not wanted" the second day. One was reefed up when getting away first from the barrier, and the other was indicated by the change of rideis effected. Te Uira gave a very bad display each day. He broke a small blood vessel the first day and was very distressed on returning to the paddock. . Taura won very easily both days, although it must be admitted he had weak opposition. J. Hall rode a good race the second day and timed his run very nicely at the finish. The totalisator is a magnet. The majority of backers had a disastrous time at the meeting, especially the second day. Yet the total on the last race of £1,683 was the biggest on any event at the fixture. A unique item in connection with the last race at the meating was that on each of the three machines in use was a different favourite. On the inside machine Rosegrove carrie 1 most money, on the centre one Aboriginal, and the outside Ladylike. They were all among the "also started" division. Aboriginal was one of the fittest horses seen out at Woodville. He

will doubtless score again soon when wanted.

Prizo Bloom, who was rnnner-up to Raugipapa the second day, is a fine big upstanding mare and bred the right way, The Possible—Primula. Sh? is a stable mate of Chatterer's. Her next appearance will probably be in tho Ashhurst Guineas when she will nwet extremely weak opposition, both as to quality and quantity. Among the starters at the meeting was a nice shapely little 4-yr. old mare out of that good pony hurdler Alpine. The latter's progeny under notice is named Alpigeue and is by Musketry. T. Lloyd of Marton has her in hand and will probably put her over the battens when older.

Pardon, on the strength of running third behind Pantaloon and Royal Blue at Foilaing was pounced on as good goods for the Second Hurdles. The Westmere gelding, who had the services of A. McConnou, let his connections down badly. The Hon. James Carroll had the large investment of £1 on Wharekura when he won, trainer Lowe nothing. One punter made a good start on the second day with £10 on Papakura. After drawing over a century he showed his common, or shall I say horse sense, by securing a seat in the back of the grandstand and remaining there all day. "The affair was not serious and did not affect the result of the race." That is how Wellington Dominion's special referred to A. 01liver's most reprehensible tactics at the business end of the Summer Handicap. This is sentimental rubbish. It was serious, and might have been much more ao. At one moment it looked as if it would lead to a bad smash-up, so strong and so persistent was the interference. The Woodville stewards are to be coinmended for their prompt action in the matter. Far too much sentiment has been permitted iu barefaced cases of this kind on the N.Z. turf because the offender is in the frontrank of horsemen. Here's a striking contrast to the Wellington writer's opinion. A prominent jockey who was standing down in the race in question said to me while the stewards were {holding an inquiry— "What on earth is Arthur thinking about to take such things on, surely the future is worth thinking about,' or words to that effect. The case was a bad and barefaced one and the authorities should certainly make the punishment such as will prove a lesson not only to Olliver, but also to other jockeys who may be tempted to follow the bad example set by one who is in the front rank of his profession. Six months' rest would be in no way severe under the circumstances. SALE OF POHUTU. Pohntu realised 400gs. at auction at Auckland yesterday. ASHHURST GUINEAS. The field for the next Ashhurst Guineas will come from tVje following:—Ru, Prize Bloom, Fond Memory, and Czarina (late Euterpe). WAIKANAE MEETING. A final reminder is given that nominations for the Waikanae New Year meeting close to-night at 8 o'clock with the secretary, Mr James A. Muir. The telegraph office at Waikanae closes at 5 p.m. THE TOTE AND THE BOOKS. WHAT THE OLljis ARE DOING. The Waitata Racing Club has arrived at the following decision:— Bookmakers, their clerk 3 and agents will not be allowed on the club's property unless a license at a fee of £20 be taken out and the following conditions observed: That they give the club a satisfactory guarantee of their ability to pay wagers, and that they be allowed one clerk to each license; that they ply their calling only in the place provided, non-ob-servance of this rendering' them liable to expulsion; that the club appoint an inspector, to whom the bookmakers must produce their books for the purpose of ascertaining whether totalisator odds have been paid, and if it is found on inspection that totalisator odds have been laid, the layer will be immediately expelled from the property and information given to the police. The first race meeting held in th 6 neighbourhood of Ohristchurch since the passage of the Gaming Act took place at Hororata on Thursday. Sixteen bookmakers were licensed by the club at a fee of £5 for the inside enclosure, and £3 for outside. They did a large business, but in spite of the fact the totalisator investments increased from £1046 at the corresponding meeting last year to £1659.
