The cricket match England v. an Australian eleven was begun here today on a good wicket. McAlister won the toss from Fane and sent Hartigan and McArtney in, Fielder and Blythe bowling. The score slowly mounted to 33. Then Hartigan drove the ball back to Braund who had relieved Blythe and the batsmau retired.
Tarrant caniG in and hit Braund for a couple and then tapped'him high to leg and was caught by Humphries. McAlister filled the vacancy. McCartney by good cricket knocked up 42 when lie drove Braund back and was caught by the bowler. Armstrong followed and hit Braund for sis and was then stumped by Humphries. The score at luncheon adjournment was 4 for 92 - , , Runs continued to come slowly and the first century was hoisted by McAlister cutting Fielder for 4. After an hour and threequarters' play McAlister and Gregory brought the total to 137 when the latter went across to Blythe, who was bowling vice Crawford, and was out lbw. Redgrave joined McAlister and the pair added 26 runs when McAlister hit Braund up to Fielder at mid off and who accepted the chance. Hayes joined Redgrave and the scoring became brisk. Redgrave went for the bowling and the second century was hoisted as r the result of two hours' play. Redgrave passed McAhster's score amid applause but shortly afterwards he was bowled by Fielder. He hit up 66 in 47 minutes. Cotter and Mayes settled down and Cotter quickly ran into the twenties and then touched one from Fielder's to Braund in the slips and the catch taken but no ball was called and Cotter's wicket was saved. The adjournement followed and on resuming, Cotter lifted Braund over the fence for six but placed the next ball in Crawford's hands at deep on —8 for 279. Evans came in and ten were added when Evans went for a short run and Hayes was run out. Saunders, the last man in, made a single when he was caught by Rhodes' and the innings closed for 299. Young and Fane went in for England, Cotter bowling to Young. The first half-hour produced 30. When the total was 24 Fane ran for a short drive and Young hesitating was nearly run out. Run-getting was not brisk. The half-century was passed and then Fane was caught by Tarrant and Humphries joined Young and played out time. A QSTR ALI i. —First Innings.
