At yesterday's meeting of the Hospital Board Sister Roberts was appointed to the nursing staff.

A meeting of the committee of the Palmerston North Tennis . Club was held on Tuesday evening when about twenty new members were elected. The New Zealand Association Gap matches will be starting in the next week or ao, for which the Palmerston team has entered.

On Monday last the Levin Amateur Dramatic Association staged "Charley's Aunt" at Levin in aid of the wife and family of Mr F. Barrett, deceased, who was for some time editor of the Manawatu Farmer. The fund will be augmented to the extent of some £25 by the performance.

The Rev. L Jolly, of the Presbyterian Church, Palmerston, gave a lecture in Masterton 011 Monday, his subject being "The manliness and genius of Robert Burns." The lecture, which was illustrated by the reading and singing of lyrics of Burns', wad much appreciated, and called for a hearty vote ot thanks.

A Press Association wire from Ashburton says a new five-roomed house in Hampstead, valued at £260, owned by Mrs Susannah Tasker and occupied by Mr J. Reddington, was completely destroyed by fire last night. Nothing was saved. The house was insured for £163 in the State office and the furniture for £75 in the Norwich Union.

Two burglaries, states a Press Association wire, have taken place with in the last two days in Wellington. A dwelling occupied by Mr W. A. Clark, 7 MacFarlane street, was entered first and a quantity of jewellery stolen to the value of £34. Yesterday afternoon an entrance was effected into the house of Mr C. A. Hickson, Commissioner of Stamps, Fitzherberi Terrace, and jewellery valued at £30 removed. So far the culprits have not been discovered.

The lonic arrived from London yesterday with 687 passengers. This is the largest number brought to New Zealand, and of the number about six hundred are immigrants consisting of labourers and tradesmen. There are also twenty-eight domestic servants who have come out under the auspices of the Gills' Friendly Society and Women's Immigration Society.

We published on Tuesday full particulars regarding the Main Trunk Railway. Sir Joseph Ward told an Auckland interviewer later that day that in addition to the engines special carriages were being built for the express service between Auckland and Wellington, and these will be a foot wider than those running at the present time. This will provide much more and greatly improved accommodation for the passengers, and will enable sleeping compartments to be provided on some cars. These cars are being designed upon the same principle as those running between Adelaide and Melbourne. It is proposed to leave Auckland at mid-day and arrive in Wellington at 8 o'clock the next morning, the return trip being similarly made at precisely the same times. The firstclass single fare from Auckland to Wellington will be £1 19s Id, and second-clsas £1 Is 2d, the return fares being exactly double these. The excursion rates will be—firstclass return, £3 lis, instead of £3 18s 2d; and seoond-class, 35s 6d, instead of 42s 4d.

At yesterday's meeting of the Hospital Board it was decided that an official visit should be paid to the Hospital at the next meeting of the board.
