FEILDING NOTES.

(Own Correspondent.)

Mr E. Short sent 30 ewes and one Roinney ram away from Feilding yesterday afternoon to fulfil an order received from the Argentine. A photograph was taken of the sheep before they were entrained.

Those interested are reminded that nominations for pedestrian events at the Feilding Athletic Club's meeting close with tlie secretary on the 6th iujjt., and for the horse events on tlie 13th.

The Glen Oroua Dairy Company's new creamery at Carnarvon will be open for receiving milk in the course of a few days. The building has been completed and the management are waiting for the machinery to come to hand before they can start operations.

William Wood, to whom I referred in yesterday's issue was fined 5s for drunkenness at the Police Court yesterday before Messrs J. W. B. Trewin and Jas. Kirton. J's.P. William Barnes and Cornelius Allen were charged before the same Justices with having broken into the booth on the racecourse during Sunday, and stealing therefrom some beer and pickles. Evidence for the prosecution was given by Mr E. Jackman, caretaker, who saw one of tlie men running away from the window of the booth with the evident intention of distracting from his mate who was inside the building regaling himself on glorious beer. Tho accused were convicted and discharged. Bro. T. A, Hastings, A.D., of the Makino Lodge has been elected without Opposition to the position of District President of No. 11 district. This includes Hastings, Dan--nevirke, Pahiatua,Palmerston, Rongotea and Feilding. Tho installation will take place the first week in February. , Gieat preparations have been made locally for the reception of the D.P., and other prominent officers and members of the Oroua Lodge who attend the Makino Lodge meeting tonight in connection with the election and installation of officers.

An- important announcement with referenoe to some very desirable properties for private sale will be made in to-morrow's issue by the wellknown land agents, Messrs Barton and Aylmer. Mr A. J. R. Stitfc, the telephone exchange clerf, leaves FeHding tomorrow on a six weeks' holiday. The vital statistics • for the Feilding district for November are as fol-low:-—Births, 28; deaths, 3; marriages, 5. The committee of the Feilding Athletic Club held a meeting last night, Mr Pryde being in the chair. The ground committee reported that it would be possible to get five or six jumps on the ground. It was deoided to have the grass cut on the Oval at once and have it rolled. Mr H. J. Booth has consented to be judge for the horse events, and Mr Kennedy for the cycle events. The tender for catering was held over till 6th December. It was decided to obtain terms from two local bands to supply the music. An interesting match was played at the bowilng green yesterday. The holders of the Yates Feathers, Messrs Saywell (skip), Stewart, Haybittle, and Thompson, were challenged by Massey (skip), Sandilands, McLean, and Oornfoot. The challengers only scored 8 and the'holders 23.

A MARE'S NEST. The Feilding Star has been concerning itself in opposition to the cutting up of estates and has found a mare's nest. It is a matter perfectly well known (although the Star apparently only discovered it last Saturday night) that in the subdivision of land showing new roads, access to the sections by roads of 66ft "Width must be provided, and that in some instances these roads must be formed and metalled Until this ia done the local body in whose distriot the subdivision is in may refuse to give its sanction to the plan. There is nothing to necessitate owners of land to submit a plan of subdivision to a local body previous to a sale of the land taking place. In the case of the subdivision of the Aorangi estata at which the Star is understood to be aiming, an undertaking is given on each plan that the vendors agree to form and metal all new roads to comply with the Oroua County Council's requirements. That amply secures purchasers, and enables any one of them to call upon the vendors to fulfil their contract. The paper, however, whilst railing at speculation in land in toto quite omits to put the other side of the question, viz. /that the subdivision of land under proper control as to streets, etc., by the local authorities as now required by law is a great advantage to all the residents, and to the local bodies more especially by inducing fresh population, as the land thereby returns more rates than formerly owing to it being more closely settled. I have no time I to discuss the question of land speculation. It is everywhere; and the I idea of the Star endeavoring to bring it to an end by writing against it recalls the old woman with the mop who was going to mop the sea dry. Iα the present instance the whole cause of the Star's perturbation has been that the Aorangi Land Syndicate considered the "Manawatu Times" a better advertising medium than the Star. HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Feilding High School Committee met last evening, Mr W. F. Bramwell presiding. Messrs Dunlop, Bowater, Mclntyre, Miner, Comfoot. and Revs. Budd and Stent were also present. An apology was received from the Rev. Mr Beecroft for non-attend-ance.* The headmaster reported that the attendance for the past month had risen to 324. The annual examination took place on 6th and 7th November and the report was submitted to the committee's consideration. The chairman intimated that £80 had been collected towards the enlargement of the school grounds, and £20 was expected daring the week. He moved, That a cheque for £100 be forwarded to the Education Board with a request that it complete the purchase of the grounds.—Carried. The following pupils received proficiency certificates : — Malcolm Carr, Ballance Hospice, Neale Johnstone, Burns Watson, Alfred Wilson, Clare Haybittle, Clara Berry. The following received competency certificates:— Frederick Hurdle, Victor Neill, Ryder Stewart, Arthur Meehaii, Margaret Bolfit, Clara Craighead, Eva Hubner, Kathleen Jackman, Nita Kirk, Elsie Maney. The chairinan said the report was not as sctis-

factory as it ought to be. Seven proficiency certificates from a class of 24 was very low. Mr Mclntyre held a contrary opinion. Mr Cornfoot considered the report of the sixth standard showed a disgraceful state of affairs. The Revs. Stent and Budd eacli defended the report; the latter said there was far too much of setting one school against another. Taking the report all through, it was as good as any in the district. After further discussion, the chairman moved, That, taking into consideration the amount of sickness during the past year, the report was satisfactory, but hoped that during next year special efforts would be made to improve the upper standards. Mr Bowater seconded the motion which was carried. The report of the secondary department showed the number of pupils to be 41, about 10 of whom were going up forr the mtariculation examination. The Rev. Budd moved, That the committee express its satisfaction with the report and hoped the children going for the higher examination would bring honor to the school. —Carried. The Revs. Stent and Budd were appointed visiting committee and the meeting adjourned. FEILDING TOWN SECTIONS. Messrs Atkinson and Co. insert in this issue an important notice of the intended sale on December 14th of 50 town sections next to those recently sold on account of Dr. Johnston. Feilding is spreading so rapidly that the paddocks of to-day are the residential quarters of tomorrow, and this sale is a notable one.
