Aβ announced by us yesterday morning the continuous telephone service asked by the Chamber of Commerce, recommended by the member for the district and urged in these columns, has been granted, and will be brought into force on agreement as to the new rate. It was suggested yesterday by the meinber for the district and the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce th*t the New Year would be a good date, though the Post-Master-General told these gentlemen they could have it at once for the extra money, and the extra £1 (under 5d per week) is as nothing compared to the advantage to subscribers, when the "increased use of the the long distance wires, and the safeguard where life and property is at stake have all been taken into consideration. And the boon granted Palmerston was yesterday extended also to Wanganui, so that the two towm Will enter the wider service probably at the same time. Sir Joseph Ward is fully seized with the great value of telephone extension and just as he has given us postal and telegraphio facilities that led the world, so he has determined that as financial exigencies permit he will do his best to generalise and popularise the telephone as it has been popularised in, for instance, California and Hawaii. And already by various concessions and improvementsjhe has gone many steps towards that very desirable goal the universal telephone.
