CARRENO.
Recital in Palmerston. Mr Norman, representing Herr Ttenno Scherek, arrived in Palmerston yesterday to make arrangements for Madame Car* reno, the celebrated pianist, to give a reoital at the Opera House on August 8. It is interesting to note that it is but a chance that Carreno did not visit New Zealand years ago. Speaking to: an Australian interviewer, she related that she had often meditated an Antipodean trip, and on two occasions she had actually prepared to do so. "Before I was in my teens," she said, "lima di Muraka, then, known as the .Hungarian nightingale* wished me to go with her as solo pianist; and a few years later I nearly joined a concert party — which included Herr Benno Scl^erek—to tour the United States with the. American soprano, Madame Kate Thayer. The project fell through as far as we were concerned, but it took Madame Thayer to Australia, and. she resided for a time in Adelaide. The hindrance to a visit has always been the same—that the concert season in England begins in Ootober and lasts untu the spring, when we birds of passage fly back to the Continent and work hard until the end of April. By that time I always find I need rest, bo that I am disinclined to push on to Sydney and Melbourne, where the season is just beginning. The presentcircumstances are different, as Herr Scherek has adroitly arranged matters so that my concerts in the colonies are a prelude to a long series previously planned for the United States."
