BRIDE'S PLIGHT.
Mile. Deschamps, who was about to be married to M. Lenoir on April 28rd, at La Haye Malherbe, in Normandy, discovered that the marriage would be illegal, because in the eye of the law she was a boy. The bride and bridegrom and their friends were gathered together previous to the ceremony, when the village schoolmaster—who is also the village clerk and registrar of births —rushed into the room, exclaiming : '' The marriage is impossible!" He explained that his predecessor hal mistakenly registered the birth as that of a boy, and under the registration Mile. Descliamps would become liable to serve as a soldier this year. The bride and bridegrom hurried off to the local mayor and magistrate, and implored them to authorise the marriage, urging that the mistake was self-evident. The authorities turned a deaf ear to their •pleading, for French red-tape is not to be treated lightly, and it will take time to repair the mistake.
