"THE MAGIC KETTLE".
At the Opera House Last
Night.
~ Diversity, culture) cleverness,- and refinement were the principal characteristics of the performance which took place at the Opera House last night.. It is somewhat singular that an entertainment which has made a strong appeal to metropolitan audiences should not have received more generous treatment here. Tbe Magic Kettle act itself is Worth all the money. It is >an eyeopener, presenting an extraordinary scientific phenomenon in a most entertaming manner, and providing the audience with food for thought as well as with a source of interest Bnd-amuse-ment. A kettle which while, boiling furiously on a block of ice freezes mercury and alcohoj, assists in the manufacture of ice cream, and in. the next breath lights .a cigar, and afterwards aubmits 10 be tossed about amongst the awlienoe for inspection, is no ordinaryrrecefta<jle. A little lecturette by ProieetQt Andrews on the extraordinary ipropertiee 61 liquid air elucidates the puzzle, and sends the audience away informed and instructed.. Apart from this'item the most popular on lho programme lastnight was the singing of the Trinity Choir Boyß who have a wonderful mastery of harmonies, and wbose ' •obneerted singing of 'popular airs earned them encores amounting in each case to a splendid ovation. Another turn which proved extremely diverting was the •leight-ofhand exhibition by Alma, a conjurer of marvellous skill and dexterity, who kept the audience amused and delighted during his occupancy of the stage. The English Pierrot Entertainers, Will and Bob Thomas, provided Amusement of a quiet kind with humorous, dramatic, and musical recitals. Miss £lsa Dwyer and Miss Elsie B Peerless . contributed to the vocal programme, and the latter was vociferously encored for her rendering of " Sing Sweet Bird."
The company will appear again toaight, when a change of programme will Represented. .■
