The steamer Konookarra has arrived from Hobart, bringing twenty-eight of the crew of the barque Mayfield, which , was totally wrecked at Swan Jsland, Bass Straits, on Sunday afternoon. The Mayfield left Geelong on Feb ruary 2nd with three thousand tons of wheat for Queenstown. She was caught in a gale and was driven ashore, striking the island. Captain Boberts, seeing no hope of saving the vessel, ran her ashore on a sandy beach, and she settled down in six fathoms. A portion of the crew landed, but when the boat returned for the remainder, it was carried away to the east coast by the current and a heavy wind. The hoat was picked up by the KonQofcarra, and those on the Island Were also taken off. The vessel is owned by Shaw, Savill and Co., and is only insured at half value. There is not the slightest ohance of saving the vessel or oi even obtaining salvage. The captain states it w*s blowing a whole gale when the vessel struck.
