ABATTOIRS.

(To the Editor.}

Sir,—Surely the members of the Council have by this time grown out of the " wobbling, don't-kuow-my-own-inind " age, and are not likely' to he bamboozled by the unreasoning " I don't want to " of the butchers' spokesman. The people of Palmerston want clean, sound meat, and that at once. It was only the other day I was speaking to one of the Government veterinary staff, who said, " you have no idea of the great number of diseased animals that are brought to be slaughtered." If killing under official inspection, even at Longburn, means increased cost to the butcher, let them charge more if their profits are too small. I fear they don't want inspection, and aro doing their best to delay it in the hope of getting a majority in the Council willing to play into their hands. By all means l«t us have abattoirs of our own as soon as we can get the money to build them, but only then if we are certain we can save money by so doing. In the meantime let us adopt the immediately and certainly attainable. Would it not be a good time now to start a co-operative butchery ?—I am, etc.,

Robt. Gardneb,

There's dozens ot remedies mother hatf tried, If we hadn't been strong, I expect we'd have died. For weeks we've been moping and swallowing trash, And when there's a lot it walks into the oash. I agreed with my Dad, who says " Woods is a hrick For showing the world how to cure a oold quick; No need to be laid up for weeks, when yon may Take Peppermint Cure, and be well in • day,"
