Assistance To Immigrants.
Picton-Wellington Service
Public Officers,
(Per Press' Association.) Wellington, Last Night. In order to allow of greater advantage being taken of the new scale of immigrant fares for pc )ple in Great Britain wishing to settle in this colony, instructions are being sent to the AgentGeneral to supply papers of approval in oases where proof is forthcoming of the existence of means of support by relatives or friends in the colony. Owing to the strain on the master of the steamer Penguin, engaged in the Welhngton-Picton-Nelson service, consequent on the difficulties of navigation and the short stages between the ports, the Union Company has appointed two masters to the vessel. They will take alternate responsibility on each stage of the service.
G. Mueller and C. W. Adams, Crown Lands Commissioners at Auckland and Mnrlborougb, are retiring from the pubJic service. They will be respectively succeeded by J. Mackenzie, Commissioner at New. Plymouth, and H. Trent chief draughtsman in the Nelson Lands' Office. Hay, chief surveyor in Hawke's Bay/succeeds Trent; and J. Langmuir of Now Plymouth, takes the post nowoccupied by Mackenzie.
